01

Purpose

The Charter establishes the governing expectations, safeguards and conditions of NZMS™ Membership and protects the distinction between professional membership and motel certification.

02

Eligibility

Applicants must demonstrate suitable sector involvement, professional standing and alignment with the purpose and values of NZMS™. Eligibility is assessed individually and may be reviewed throughout the membership term.

03

Categories

Membership may be granted as NZMS™ Member, NZMS™ Professional or NZMS™ Industry Partner according to the applicant’s role, standing and the approved plan issued by NZMS™.

04

Approval and activation

Membership is granted only after individual review, approval in principle, acceptance of the applicable Membership Terms and Charter, verified payment where required, and final activation authorised by Susie Barber. Application or payment alone does not create membership.

05

Membership term and renewal

Membership is time-limited, ordinarily for 12 months from the recorded issue date, and is subject to renewal, current information, continued suitability, payment and compliance with the current governing documents.

06

Professional conduct

Members must act lawfully, honestly, respectfully and professionally; keep relevant information accurate; avoid misleading claims; and refrain from conduct that materially damages NZMS™, its certification integrity or confidence in the motel and accommodation sector.

07

Use of NZMS™ Membership Designations

Approved members may use only the designation corresponding to their current approved category:

NZMS™ Member

Approved wording:

NZMS™ Member
Member of New Zealand Motel Standards™

NZMS™ Professional

Approved wording:

NZMS™ Professional
Professional Member of New Zealand Motel Standards™

NZMS™ Industry Partner

Approved wording:

NZMS™ Industry Partner
Industry Partner of New Zealand Motel Standards™

Members must not:

  • describe themselves or their motel as NZMS™ Certified unless the motel holds a current published certification;
  • use NZMS™ Accredited;
  • use NZMS™ Approved Motel;
  • imply that membership endorses all products, services or business practices;
  • use the official motel certification seal;
  • modify, recolour, redraw or combine the membership mark with another mark;
  • create a certification-style badge from the membership designation;
  • transfer the membership designation or card to another person or organisation;
  • continue using the designation after expiry, suspension or revocation;

Membership confirms an approved relationship with New Zealand Motel Standards™. It does not constitute motel certification, accreditation, inspection approval or a guarantee of commercial performance.

Members may use only the official wording, digital credential or membership artwork issued or expressly authorised by NZMS™ for their current category. Unauthorised badges, altered marks and certification-style graphics are prohibited.

08

Distinction from certification

NZMS™ Membership does not constitute motel certification, inspection approval or accreditation. Only a motel that has completed the full NZMS™ certification process and holds a current published certification may be described as NZMS™ certified or use the official certification seal.

09

Public verification and optional directory

Verification consent covers only the limited information necessary to confirm a current member number and membership status. Member Directory inclusion is optional, separately consented, subject to administrative approval and may be withdrawn without automatically cancelling membership.

10

Privacy and records

Application and membership information is handled under the NZMS™ Privacy Policy and applicable law. Access is restricted to the Founder and authorised administrators or advisers who require the information for review, payment, activation, verification, support or governance.

11

Suspension, expiry and revocation

Membership may be suspended, allowed to expire, declined for renewal or revoked where eligibility, conduct, payment, accuracy, designation use or programme requirements are not met. Where appropriate, the member will receive notice and an opportunity to provide relevant information before a final decision.

12

Complaints and review

Concerns are recorded and considered through the applicable NZMS™ review process. Membership complaints are kept separate from motel-certification complaints and appeals.

13

Non-transferability

Membership status, member numbers, digital cards, verification records and designations are personal or organisation-specific and may not be transferred, assigned, lent or represented as belonging to another person or entity.

Commercial terms, payment, cancellation and refund conditions are set out in the NZMS™ Membership Terms.
