Independent Certification Purpose
NZMS™ is an independent standards and certification initiative for New Zealand motels. Its purpose is to recognise responsible operators who demonstrate visible standards of care, cleanliness, safety, service, presentation, guest dignity and operational excellence — and to help restore public confidence in the motel sector.
Legal Operating Entity
NZMS™ is operated by New Zealand Motel Standards Limited. NZMS™ is not a government agency, statutory authority, regulator, or government accreditation body. NZMS™ certification is not a legal compliance certificate and does not replace statutory, legal, council, insurance, health and safety, or regulatory obligations.
Assessor Independence
NZMS™ assessments are conducted independently of any booking platform, tourism board, government body, motel association, or commercial accommodation network. Assessors operate to the NZMS™ framework and are instructed to apply standards consistently, fairly, and without commercial favour.
Conflicts of Interest
NZMS™ requires assessors and reviewers to declare any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest relating to a motel under review. Where a conflict is declared, the affected assessor is recused from that application and an alternative reviewer is appointed. No operator may purchase a favourable outcome, and payment of certification fees cannot influence, accelerate or guarantee the certification decision.
Evidence and Decision Principles
Certification decisions are based on the NZMS™ standards framework, the applicant's submitted information, self-assessment responses, supporting evidence, and — where appropriate — site or mystery-guest assessment. Decisions are made against the framework at the time of review. Self-assessment is a preparation tool and does not automatically result in certification.
Complaints
Complaints about NZMS™ certification conduct, assessor behaviour, or the administration of a certification may be submitted in writing to nzms@consultant.com. Each complaint is acknowledged, reviewed by a party not involved in the original decision where possible, and responded to with a reasoned outcome.
Appeals and Review
An operator whose application is declined may request a review of the decision. Review requests must be submitted in writing, setting out the grounds for review and any new information. Reviews are conducted by a reviewer who was not part of the original decision. A review may uphold, vary, or overturn the original decision.
Certification Suspension or Withdrawal
NZMS™ reserves the right to suspend or withdraw certification where a motel no longer meets the NZMS™ standards, where certification was obtained on false or misleading information, or where the NZMS™ badge or seal is misused. Where certification is suspended or withdrawn, the motel is removed from the public verification directory and the operator is notified in writing.
Confidentiality
All applications, self-assessments, evidence, review notes, and outcomes are treated with discretion and confidentiality. Non-certification is not published. Only motels that are certified and approved for publication appear in the public verification directory. Applicant, payment, and assessment records are not exposed publicly.
Standards Advisory Board
A Standards Advisory Board is being established to provide independent guidance on the NZMS™ framework, standards development, and review integrity. Board appointments are developing until formally confirmed. No board members, partners, or advisers are named on this site until appointments have been formally approved by the Founder.
