A structured, transparent pathway from expression of interest to annual renewal — designed to recognise care, consistency, and professional pride, not to penalise or pressure operators. Every step is handled with respect, discretion, and a focus on constructive support.
The NZMS™ Applicant Pathway
A clear eight-stage pathway from application to seal issue and continuing review.

Submit application
Submit your motel profile, contact details, and operating information through the secure NZMS™ application form.

Receive secure applicant access
After submission, you receive a secure applicant access token to track progress through the applicant portal.

Pay the application fee
After acknowledgement, pay the one-off NZ$295 + GST certification application fee using the current secure instruction issued by NZMS™. The total payable is NZ$339.25.

Complete readiness review
Complete the confidential NZMS™ readiness review across the seven standards to reflect on your current position.

Supply evidence
Provide supporting evidence, documentation, and photos as requested to substantiate your standards and practices.

Assessment and clarification
Your application and evidence are assessed against the NZMS™ framework, with clarification sought where needed.

Certification decision
A certification decision is made by NZMS™ following review. You are informed of the outcome and any next steps.

Seal issue and continuing review
Approved motels receive the NZMS™ seal and certificate, with annual renewal supporting continued standards.
Confidentiality Throughout the Process
All application material, self-assessment responses, uploaded photos, and review notes are held securely and reviewed only by authorised NZMS™ administrators. Private information is never published publicly without approval. Only motels that are certified and intentionally published appear in the public Certified Motels Directory.
NZMS™ certification is an independent standards certificate. It is not government accreditation, regulatory approval, or a legal compliance certificate.
Self-assessment helps motel operators prepare for review. It does not automatically result in certification. Final certification requires NZMS™ review and approval.

Specific areas must be strengthened before certification can proceed. NZMS™ will identify the matters requiring attention.

After certification
What an NZMS™ certified motel receives
Certification provides a controlled property credential, public verification and a continuing professional-improvement pathway. It is separate from NZMS™ professional membership.
Unique public verification link
A certificate number and official website link allowing guests, partners and the public to check the motel’s current certification status.
Certified Motels Directory
Approved publication in the NZMS™ Certified Motels Directory, displaying the motel’s name, region, level, certificate number and review date.
Website trust link
Approved website wording and a direct link to the official NZMS™ verification record, rather than an unsupported or self-created badge claim.
Applicant and renewal pathway
Private access to application progress, certification information, renewal dates and requested next steps through the NZMS™ Applicant Portal.
Practical standards resources
Access to current guides, checklists and professional references supporting presentation, housekeeping, communication, complaints, operations and renewal.
Confidential improvement guidance
Constructive findings and priority recommendations to help protect consistency and strengthen the guest-confidence experience.
Renewal reminders
