New Zealand Motel Standards™ began as an independent motel standards and certification organisation. It is now building a wider hospitality and property group designed to verify standards, transform suitable properties, operate motels professionally and scale through controlled licensing and capital partnerships.

Why NZMS™ Exists
The industry needs more than another badge.
Motels are an essential part of New Zealand’s visitor economy, regional communities, family travel and business life. They should offer dependable rooms, professional service and a truthful promise before the guest arrives.
Yet parts of the sector face inconsistent reinvestment, room condition, service delivery and public confidence. NZMS™ was established to verify standards and is now being developed to help transform suitable properties rather than merely comment on decline.
The ambition is not cosmetic accreditation. It is visible proof, stronger operations, renewed assets and a motel category people can trust again.

NZMS™ will keep independent certification at the centre of its authority while building the property-transformation, operating, distribution, licensing and capital-partnership capabilities required to create better motels and a scalable international platform.
The current NZMS™ certification pathway applies to New Zealand motels. Property transformation, operations, licensed brands, capital partnerships and international expansion are strategic programmes in development and will be separately structured, governed and publicly defined.

About the Founder

Susie Barber, MBA, is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of New Zealand Motel Standards™. She sets the organisation’s strategic direction, governance and certification philosophy, with a mandate to build the company that will rebuild, operate and globally redefine the motel industry.
An entrepreneur and executive leader with more than three decades of experience across New Zealand and Australia, Susie founded the Susie B Finishing School of Etiquette Education in 1995 and is the authority behind Susie Barber Etiquette Expert and Ask Susie Barber™. She has built an international practice in etiquette education, executive presence, luxury hospitality and service culture, and is sought out by international luxury hotels as a consultant in refined etiquette, premium service standards and exceptional guest experience.
She is the published author of Death Row, Silenced No More and Modern Manners, a respected media commentator and Ambassador for The Louise Nicholas Trust. Through NZMS™, Susie is bringing executive leadership, commercial discipline, international hospitality insight and uncompromising standards together to create a New Zealand-born property, operating and brand platform capable of global scale.
