The next chapter of NZMS™
The Melbourne Founding Pilot marks NZMS™ taking its first controlled step beyond New Zealand. New Zealand Motel Standards Limited is carrying the discipline, independence and guest-confidence philosophy developed at home into an Australian-specific programme through AU Motel Standards™.
This is not expansion for expansion’s sake. It is a deliberate proof of concept: five Melbourne motels, one carefully governed founding cohort, and a clear ambition to demonstrate how stronger standards can rebuild confidence in the motel category across borders.

New Zealand founded. Melbourne first. Standards without borders.
NZMS™ remains the New Zealand standards and certification authority.
AU Motel Standards™ is the Australian programme operated by New Zealand Motel Standards Limited.
Melbourne is the controlled founding market before any wider Australian expansion is considered.
Why Melbourne. Why now.
The Australian programme begins in Melbourne by design. Rather than opening nationally at once, NZMS is establishing a small reference cohort so the application, evidence, assessment and certification controls can be proven in an Australian operating context before any broader expansion is considered.
Founding participation means helping establish that first controlled cohort. It does not create preferential certification treatment, a guaranteed outcome or government recognition.
A deliberately limited inaugural Melbourne cohort, designed to establish the Australian programme carefully rather than launch at scale.
Each motel is considered individually against the Australian standards framework. Participation never purchases or guarantees certification.
Application material, photographs and assessment evidence remain confidential unless separate publication approval is given.
A controlled pathway
The Melbourne pilot separates application, payment, assessment and certification so no commercial step can be mistaken for a certification outcome.
Submit the Melbourne founding-pilot application and core motel information securely.
NZMS reviews the application for suitability and may request clarification before any fee instruction is issued.
If the application progresses, New Zealand Motel Standards Limited issues the authorised NZD payment instructions for the NZ$300 + GST application and initial-assessment contribution and the NZ$950 + GST annual certification programme. No payment is taken when this form is submitted.
Property evidence is reviewed against the Australian standards framework and improvement may be requested.
Certification is recorded only after the required evidence and review are complete. Pilot participation alone is not certification.
Founding Five proposition
Selected motels may participate in the inaugural Melbourne cohort, contribute practical feedback on the Australian pathway and, if they later satisfy the required standards and independent decision process, become part of the first certified Australian group.
Independent by design
AU Motel Standards™ is an independent private certification programme operated by New Zealand Motel Standards Limited. It is not an Australian government agency, regulator or accreditation body, and certification is not a legal compliance certificate.
Founder application
Submission is free. No card details are requested and no payment is taken when you apply. If your application is invited to progress, NZMS will issue the approved NZD payment instructions for the NZ$300 + GST application and initial-assessment contribution and NZ$950 + GST annual certification programme separately. Payment does not guarantee certification.
